Agartala, November 12: A lawyer, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a muhuri (court clerk) in a violent clash in the court premises, has been arrested by the West Agartala police on Sunday. The accused lawyer, Gopal Singh, was nabbed near his home and will be produced in the court on Monday.

The incident took place on September 5, when a group of two lawyers and three muhuris attacked Amit Acharjee, a licensed muhuri, in the district court over a previous dispute. Amit Acharjee sustained serious injuries in the assault and was admitted to GB Hospital. He was later shifted to a hospital abroad for better treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on September 23.

Amit Acharjee’s father, Dilip Acharjee, filed a case at the West Agartala police station on the same day, demanding justice for his son. He claimed that the CCTV footage of the court would reveal the truth of the matter. However, the police allegedly delayed the investigation and the five accused went into hiding.

On Sunday, the police received a tip-off that Gopal Singh, one of the accused lawyers, was seen near his house. The police raided the area and arrested him. The police said that the other four accused are still absconding, but they have gathered all the information and will catch them soon.

Dilip Acharjee, the father of the deceased muhuri, appealed to the administration to intervene and ensure justice for his son. He said that his son was killed for no reason and the culprits should be punished.
