Agartala, 7th September 2026 : Agartala, September 7: The Left Front has alleged that BJP and Tipra Motha workers are preventing CPI(M) and other Left Front candidates from filing their nomination papers for the upcoming Village Committee elections in several blocks of West Tripura district.
Raising the allegations, a delegation of Left Front leaders and workers met the West Tripura District Magistrate on Sunday and submitted a deputation, demanding that all candidates be provided a safe and democratic environment to file their nominations.
Speaking to reporters, Left Front leader Manik Dey alleged that, barring the Mandai block, ruling party miscreants have been stationed in several blocks of West Tripura district since September 1. He claimed that opposition candidates, particularly those from the CPI(M), were being threatened and obstructed from submitting their nomination papers, with allegations of physical attacks as well.
Dey alleged that in Hezamara block, nomination-related documents were allegedly snatched from candidates and torn apart. He further claimed that even original documents were damaged.
In another allegation, Left Front leaders said candidates in Dukli block who were preparing to file their nominations had received threatening phone calls warning that their houses would be set on fire.
The Left Front alleged that an undemocratic atmosphere had been created in several blocks, including Old Agartala, Jirania, Belbari and Lefunga. They demanded that the administration ensure adequate security for candidates and allow them to submit their nominations without obstruction.
The Left Front also demanded that, if adequate security cannot be provided at the designated nomination centres, alternative venues should be arranged to enable candidates to exercise their democratic right to file nominations.
According to Dey, district administration officials heard their grievances and acknowledged that their demands were reasonable. However, the officials reportedly said that a decision could not be taken independently and assured the delegation that the matter would be discussed with the concerned authorities before a decision is communicated.
The Left Front further claimed that West Tripura district has 85 Village Committees comprising a total of 656 seats. The party, it said, is preparing to field candidates in all the seats and has urged the administration to ensure that every candidate gets an unhindered opportunity to file their nomination papers.
