Agartala, 1st July 2024:   The streets of Agartala witnessed a significant protest march on Monday as the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Tripura Tea Workers Union (TTWU) voiced their opposition to what they describe as the illegal destruction of tea plantations and land encroachment allegedly supported by the state government.

Tripura CITU president Manik Dey highlighted the historical significance of Tripura’s tea gardens stating, “Tripura’s tea gardens were built during the Victorian era. The horticulture industry is crucial in generating employment.” Dey asserted that the horticulture sector has faced continuous attacks since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power in the state.

Dey further alleged, “There is a law that the tea garden land cannot be transferred. Despite this, the tea garden areas are being transferred in writing. Tea gardens are being destroyed illegally in the dark of night.”

The protest led by leftist organizations, aims to draw attention to these alleged illegal activities and seeks immediate intervention to safeguard the tea industry and its workers in Tripura.
