Agartala, 10th March 2026: In a landmark ruling, the Additional District & Sessions Judge of Khowai District has handed down life imprisonment to two men, Chiranjit Debbarma (42) and Shibaji Debbarma (33), residents of Para Kalak, Biswachandra Para, Teliamura. Each has also been fined ₹10,000, with a default clause of an additional six months’ simple imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The duo was found guilty under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code for the murder of Ranjan Debbarma in 2011. The incident traces back to October 3, 2011, when Ranjan went missing while visiting Duski Market in Khowai District for business purposes. His severely injured body was discovered the next morning near D.S. Para Camp in a nearby jungle. Before passing away at GBP Hospital, Agartala, Ranjan reportedly identified three assailants who had attacked him with a tree branch.
Following a detailed investigation led by Sub-Inspector Asish Sarkar of Teliamura Police Station (currently Inspector and OC of Kalyanpur Police Station), a chargesheet was filed on May 31, 2012. After reviewing the evidence, the court convicted Chiranjit and Shibaji Debbarma and imposed the life sentences.
