Agartala, 13th May 2025: A sudden lightning strike at Kurti High Secondary Madrasa in North Tripura’s Kurti area this afternoon left eight students seriously injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place amid heavy rain and thunder when a powerful lightning bolt struck the madrasa premises. Students present nearby began exhibiting symptoms of shock and distress almost immediately.
“The sky suddenly lit up with a blinding flash, and we heard a loud noise. Moments later, students were collapsing and crying out in pain,” said a local resident who witnessed the incident.
The Madrasa’s cleric responded quickly and alerted the Kadamtala Fire Department. Firefighters rushed to the scene, rescued the injured students, and transported them to Kadamtala Primary Health Center for emergency care. Medical officials, after initial treatment, referred all eight students to Dharmanagar District Hospital due to the seriousness of their condition.
“All the injured students are currently receiving treatment at North Tripura District Hospital in Dharmanagar. Their condition is being closely monitored,” said a hospital employee.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the community. Concerned parents and guardians have demanded enhanced safety measures in schools and Madrasas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“Children’s safety during natural disasters must be prioritized. We urge the administration to install proper lightning protection systems in all educational institutions,” said a member of the local guardians’ committee.
