Agartala, 13th May 2025: Residents of Jolaibari and Belonia have voiced their frustration over the deteriorating condition of the newly constructed alternative national highway. Alleging that the contractor responsible for the project disregarded public concerns, locals have called for immediate action.
“The road was built as per the state government’s development program, but its quality is far below expectations. We’ve been raising concerns since construction began, yet our voices were ignored. Now, before even a year has passed, potholes are everywhere, making it unsafe for commuters,” said Mithun Datta, a resident of West Pilak and head of Uchhas Samajik Sansthan.
Repair work has commenced in several areas, but residents claim that the process lacks proper warning signs, leading to frequent accidents. On Monday night, Dutta himself fell into an unmarked ditch while traveling and sustained injuries. Thanks to the swift intervention of Jolaibari fire brigade personnel, he received timely medical assistance.
Concerned about the situation, local MLA and Minister Shuklacharan Noatia has urged the state and central transport ministries to review the construction process and address public grievances.
“The ministers must intervene and ensure that corrective steps are taken to prevent further accidents. People’s safety must be prioritized,” Datta told the media personnel today.
Residents continue to demand accountability from authorities, hoping that their calls for action will result in improved road conditions and safer travel.
