Agartala, 4th April 2025:  The Howrah River, a lifeline for many residents in the vicinity of Agartala is in a dire state, according to complaints from locals. The situation is particularly alarming in the Aralia area, where idols from Thakur Puja are being discarded into the river with no measures in place for their removal. The river water has deteriorated significantly causing widespread discontent among the community.

The once-pristine river now hosts heaps of waste, including plastic bottles and other garbage. What was previously a sand-rich riverbed has turned into a stretch dominated by soil, further diminishing its appeal and usability. Residents lament that the river, which once served as a source of daily water and a site for bathing and fishing, is now largely neglected.

Local residents have urged the government to take immediate action to clean the idols and accumulated waste from the river. They have also appealed to the public to refrain from disposing of garbage into the water, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility to restore the river to its former glory.
