Agartala, 4th April 2025: A written complaint has been filed against Barun Das, a teacher of a 12th-grade school in Khowai Gonki, for allegedly embezzling various old items from the school.
The complaint, submitted to District Education Officer Dinesh Debbarma a few days ago, accuses Das of taking bricks, rods, water pumps, and furniture to his residence without proper authorization.
According to the complaint, government schools must follow a tender process when old buildings are demolished. However, Barun Das reportedly bypassed this procedure and transferred tin sheets, rods, bricks, and other materials from the school’s old building to his home without informing anyone, including the acting headmistress, Shanti Das.
Additionally, during elections, temporary toilets constructed with tin sheets by the district administration for the use of stationed foreign troops were allegedly dismantled and taken by Das to his home. The complaint also mentions that banana trees within the school boundary were frequently cut down by him, with the harvested bananas being sold in the Tabla Bari market.
The locals have expressed strong opposition to the misuse of government property for personal gain. Despite repeated discussions with the school authorities, no action was taken against Barun Das. They have also criticized acting headmistress Shanti Das for not taking a stand against the teacher’s alleged misconduct.
Upon inquiry, District Education Officer Dinesh Debbarma confirmed that an investigation has been launched. A four-member committee has been formed to verify the allegations and ensure appropriate action is taken if the accusations prove to be true.
