Agartala, 24th September 2026 : Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday accused the BJP, Tipra Motha Party and IPFT of large-scale corruption and irregularities in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas.
Addressing an election campaign programme in Gomati district, Chaudhury claimed that the BJP had “already lost” the Village Committee (VC) elections even before counting, scheduled for October 5, alleging that the ruling party had been reluctant to hold the elections.
“How have they lost? Because they did not want to hold this election but were forced to conduct it following the Supreme Court’s direction,” Chaudhury said.
He alleged that the tenure of the Village Committees had expired long ago, but elections were not conducted on time. During this period, he questioned who had been responsible for distributing government benefits, allotting works, administering the committees and managing other local affairs.
“Who gave houses, works, who ran the administration and distributed the rubber trees? They were people of the BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha, and they did it illegally,” he alleged.
Chaudhury further alleged that large-scale financial irregularities took place in the ADC areas during the past several years and claimed that public funds worth crores of rupees were misused. He said the previous VC election was held in 2016 and alleged that the delay in holding the next election had deprived people of an opportunity to participate in local self-governance.
The CPI(M) leader also contrasted the present situation with the period when the Left Front was in power in Tripura. He claimed that villagers earlier received information about funds sanctioned, works undertaken and expenditure incurred through the Village Committees.
“Earlier, people knew how much money had come, who received the work and how much had been spent. At the end of the year, the Village Committee provided the details and suggestions were taken from the people,” he said.
Chaudhury alleged that employment opportunities in rural areas had declined under the present government and claimed that only selected people were receiving work.
“Common people are not getting work. That is why there is a crisis in the villages. People are leaving their villages in search of work because there are limited opportunities locally,” he said.
He urged voters to bring about a change in the functioning of the village-level administration through the upcoming Village Committee elections.
