Agartala, 23rd September 2026 : Tripura Pradesh Congress today accused the ruling BJP of allegedly using administrative machinery and other means to influence the upcoming Village Committee elections, claiming that opposition candidates were being obstructed in parts of the state.
Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that the BJP was repeating what he termed “undemocratic activities” witnessed during earlier elections. He claimed that opposition parties and candidates were facing hurdles while carrying out election-related activities.
Saha also questioned the timing of the change in the State Election Commissioner ahead of the election announcement, alleging that the development raised concerns about the conduct of the polls.
The Congress leader further referred to the formation of the three-party opposition alliance, claiming that disagreements over seat-sharing had created uncertainty and that senior leaders had to travel to Delhi before the arrangement was finalised. He also claimed that the alliance had faced dissatisfaction among sections of its grassroots workers.
According to Saha, opposition candidates were allegedly stopped from submitting nomination papers at certain locations, while some were reportedly pressured to withdraw their nominations. He said such incidents raised questions about whether candidates were being provided a level playing field.
Saha alleged that the Election Commission, police and civil administration were favouring the ruling party. He urged the authorities to ensure adequate security and maintain a neutral environment so that voters could exercise their franchise peacefully in the Village Committee elections scheduled for September 28.
Congress state in-charge and MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka also appealed to voters in the ADC areas to give the Congress an opportunity through the Village Committee polls.
“If Congress fails to perform well, remove us from power,” Ulaka said, while stating that the party was preparing for the 2028 Assembly elections and would work collectively for Tripura’s development.
Ulaka also criticised the BJP and Tipra Motha, alleging that political competition between the two parties was diverting attention from issues affecting the people.
