LoP seeks judicial probe into DGP Anurag Dhankar’s death

Date:

Agartala, 21st July 2026:  Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has called for a judicial inquiry into the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident warrant an independent investigation.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury questioned what could have driven the state’s top police officer to take such an alleged extreme step. He argued that the incident should be viewed against what he described as the “abnormal situation” prevailing in Tripura over the past eight years, alleging a decline in democratic and constitutional rights and a weakening of the rule of law.

According to the CPI(M) leader, while ordinary citizens can voice their concerns, senior bureaucrats and police officers functioning within a disciplined service are often unable to speak freely. He claimed to have interacted with Dhankar on several occasions in recent weeks over various issues and alleged that the DGP appeared disturbed and under stress.

Chaudhury said these developments have raised serious questions and urged the government to order a judicial probe by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.

He further asserted that such a step would reflect the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth. Expressing distrust in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, Chaudhury alleged that the agency functions as a political instrument of the ruling party. He also questioned the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister, saying the death of the state’s highest-ranking police officer has sparked widespread concern and that people deserve clear answers.

The state government has not issued any response to the allegations made by the Leader of the Opposition.
