Agartala, 20th May 2025: CPI(M) State Secretary and Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury today said that the personal freedom of citizens is being steadily eroded under the BJP regime in the state.
He said this after strongly condemning the alleged harassment of street performer Sanu Malakar in the Matabari premises, calling it a violation of personal freedom and an alarming sign of administrative inaction.
Addressing the media, Chaudhury said that Sanu Malakar, a resident of Beltali in Agartala, has been using his artistic skills to earn a living and support the underprivileged. “He regularly performs in public spaces and uses his earnings to help poor people,” he noted.
However, on Monday, a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing Sanu being attacked in the premises of the revered Tripureshwari temple in Matabari. The video, now viral, depicts a Hindutva supporter allegedly confronting and assaulting Sanu while he was performing and offering assistance to an elderly woman.
“Sanu’s only fault was that he was singing and dancing to devotional songs that were not from the Hindu tradition. For this, he was labelled a jihadi and brutally assaulted,” Chaudhury said. “It is shocking and deeply disappointing that the administration has yet to take any action against the perpetrators.”
Chaudhury asserted that incidents like this reflect a larger pattern of diminishing civil liberties in Tripura. “The personal freedom of citizens is being steadily eroded. Innocent people are being denied justice by the very administration that is supposed to protect them,” he said. The senior CPI(M) leader urged the state government and the police administration to take swift and decisive action against those involved in the attack and ensure that justice is served.
