Agartala, 10th October 2026 : Agartala woke up to a festive atmosphere on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya on Saturday, as residents stepped out in large numbers to soak in the spirit of the autumn festival. From the early hours, streets across the capital, particularly the College Tilla area, witnessed a steady flow of people, with families, friends and children enjoying the special morning.
Mahalaya marks the conclusion of Pitripaksha and the beginning of Devipaksha, heralding the countdown to Durga Puja, one of the most eagerly awaited festivals in Bengal and Tripura. The day carries deep religious and cultural significance, with the anticipation of Goddess Durga’s arrival bringing a sense of excitement among people.
The festive mood was clearly visible across Agartala, where groups of residents were seen strolling along the streets, exchanging greetings and spending quality time with their loved ones. Children added to the liveliness of the occasion as they accompanied their parents and guardians on morning outings.
Several residents, while speaking to journalists, said that stepping out on Mahalaya morning had a special charm of its own. While some make morning walks a regular habit, others consider Mahalaya a unique occasion to experience the city’s festive atmosphere. They said the gathering of people, chance encounters with acquaintances and the cheerful presence of children made the morning particularly memorable.
For many, Mahalaya is more than a religious observance, offering an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends while embracing the spirit of Sharodotsav. The enthusiasm among residents reflected the growing excitement ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations.
Despite the increased movement of people in different parts of the city, the atmosphere remained peaceful. Residents also acknowledged the cooperation of the police administration in helping maintain public convenience and safety.
With crowds filling the streets and families enjoying the morning together, Mahalaya once again brought Agartala closer to the festive season, setting the tone for the much-awaited Durga Puja celebrations.
