Jitendra Chaudhury slams Modi government after arrest along with Manik Sarkar in Delhi

Date:

Agartala,  10th  October 2026 :  Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah after Delhi Police arrested him while he was on his way to participate in the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was accompanying him when the police intervened.

Alleging that the government was attempting to suppress democratic dissent and conceal irregularities in the electoral process, Chaudhury claimed that the protest had gained support from students, youth and ordinary citizens across the country. He described the developments as a sign of growing public opposition to the Modi government.

“The downfall of the Modi government has begun today,” Chaudhury said, accusing Modi and Shah of making arrangements to protect Ganesh Kumar amid allegations of manipulation of electoral rolls.

Questioning the restrictions reportedly imposed in Delhi ahead of the demonstration, the CPI(M) leader alleged that transport services and other facilities had been disrupted to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar. He claimed that metro and train services, buses, hotels, restaurants and internet connectivity had been affected since the previous day.

Chaudhury questioned why such restrictions were necessary when the students and youth organising the demonstration had stated that they would abide by the law. He alleged that the measures were intended to prevent citizens from exercising their democratic rights and raising their voices against the government.

The Opposition leader further accused the ruling establishment of acting against the Constitution and attempting to undermine the country’s democratic institutions through alleged electoral irregularities.

He maintained that the issue had drawn wider public attention, with students, young people and ordinary citizens joining the opposition to what he described as an attempt to undermine the electoral process and weaken democracy.

Reacting to his arrest, Chaudhury said he was unaware of where the Delhi Police would take him. He questioned the action against the protesters and reiterated that their movement was aimed at defending the democratic rights of citizens.

The detention of the two senior CPI(M) leaders ahead of the CJP demonstration added to the political tensions surrounding the protest. Chaudhury’s allegations regarding electoral irregularities and restrictions in Delhi were not independently verified at the time of filing this report.
