Agartala, 10th October 2026 : Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday warned of strict legal action against hooliganism, violence and indiscipline among transport operators at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport, Agartala, stating that arrests and cancellation of road permits would follow any further incidents of misconduct. He stressed that the airport represents the face of Tripura and that unruly behaviour towards passengers could damage the state’s reputation and undermine its tourism potential.
Addressing a uniform distribution programme for prepaid taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers at the airport on Saturday afternoon, Chowdhury said the government would maintain zero tolerance for violence, vandalism and harassment, regardless of the political affiliations of those involved.
“Any form of disorder will not be tolerated. Legal action will be taken—road permits have been cancelled in the past and will be cancelled again, arrests will be made, and the law will take its course,” he cautioned, referring to two recent incidents that resulted in arrests.
The minister said the uniform distribution initiative, launched three years ago, aimed to promote dignity, responsibility and professionalism among transport workers. Uniforms are being provided to 420 workers this year through the Transport Department.
Emphasising the importance of passenger hospitality, Chowdhury said visitors often form their first impression of Tripura upon arriving at MBB Airport. Aggressive behaviour and disputes over passengers could create a negative perception of the state and its people.
Invoking the principle of Atithi Devo Bhava, he urged drivers to welcome visitors respectfully and maintain professional conduct.
Regarding the introduction of private cab aggregators such as Uber, the minister said the government had consulted local operators before implementing the service. He assured workers that approved fare regulations would apply to private aggregators and urged them to submit evidence of any alleged violations for investigation.
Some operators raised concerns about fares, outside vehicles and alleged irregularities in permits and licences. Chowdhury invited them to present their grievances before the authorities but warned against resorting to violence or damaging company signage and counters.
The minister was accompanied by Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma, IG Law and Order Manchak Ipper, Traffic SP Kanta Jangir, Airport Director Shekhar Debbarma and others.
Chowdhury urged transport workers to cooperate with the administration and help protect Tripura’s image through disciplined, safe and courteous service.
