Mahila Congress gheraos Tripura Commission for Women, seeks judicial probe into Manisha Das death

Date:

Agartala, 1st July 2026:  The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress on Tuesday staged a gherao of the State Women’s Commission, demanding a judicial inquiry into the death of Manisha Das and alleging that the Commission has failed to act on crimes against women in the state.

Addressing the media personnel outside the Commission’s office, Pradesh Mahila Congress president Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty alleged that incidents of rape and gang rape involving women and girls have been increasing in Tripura, while the administration and the Women’s Commission have remained “inactive.”

Referring to the death of Manisha Das at Santiniketan Medical College on June 10, Chakraborty questioned the circumstances surrounding the case, alleging that it was declared a suicide without a proper investigation. She claimed Das, whose duty hours were from 9 am to 5 pm, had been provided accommodation at the institution, where her body was found hanging three days later. “There are several unanswered questions surrounding her death. We demand a judicial inquiry to uncover the truth,” she said.

Chakraborty said the Mahila Congress had earlier laid siege to the office of the Director General of Police on June 19, urging the government to order a judicial probe, but alleged that no action had been taken.

She also criticised the Women’s Commission for allegedly remaining silent on several incidents of violence against women, including the alleged rape of a minor in Anandanagar, and questioned its effectiveness in safeguarding women’s rights.

Warning of intensified protests, Chakraborty said the Mahila Congress would launch a statewide movement if the government failed to order a judicial inquiry into Manisha Das’s death. She asserted that the organisation would continue its campaign for justice and accountability in cases involving crimes against women.

The allegations made by the Mahila Congress have not yet drawn an official response from the State Women’s Commission or the government.
