Agartala, January 28:  A maid, who had been working at the house of Dr. Indranil Nandi in Bhati Abhaynagar area of the capital, was arrested by the police on Saturday after she was caught stealing from the house by a CCTV camera. The maid, identified as Jamuna Bhattacharya, a resident of West Bhubanban area, had allegedly been stealing money, coins, gold ornaments and other items from the house since she was employed in September 2023.

The owner of the house, Indranil Nandi, said that he had trusted Jamuna and had not suspected her of any wrongdoing. He said that he had even given a gold chain to his mother for keeping it. But later found out that she had stolen it on the day of his wedding. He said that he had also noticed that other things were missing from his house after his marriage, but he had not accused Jamuna of anything.

However, he decided to record the video on his mobile phone and leave it at home when he went to work on Saturday. He said that his mother, who was also at home, had seen Jamuna opening the cupboard and taking out some cash. When his mother confronted Jamuna, she denied stealing anything. Indranil said that he had also seen the video on his mobile phone, which showed Jamuna’s theft clearly. He said that he had filed a complaint against Jamuna at the NCC police station and handed over the video evidence to the police.

The OC of NCC police station said that the police had arrested Jamuna after registering a case against her. He said that the police had recovered a stolen gold chain, two gold earrings, a laptop and cash of Rs 24,565 from Jamuna based on her confession. He said that Jamuna had been produced before the court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody.

The incident has created a stir in the Bhati Abhaynagar area, where people have expressed their shock and anger over Jamuna’s theft. They have also warned others to be careful while hiring maids and to get detailed information about them before employing them. They have said that Jamuna had betrayed the trust of her employer and had caused a lot of trouble for him and his family.
