Man Arrested in Kathalia for Allegedly Attempting to Rape Younger Brother’s Wife

Agartala, 3rd September 2026 :  A 44-year-old man was arrested by Jatrapur police on allegations of attempting to rape and physically assault his younger brother’s wife in the Kathalia area of Tripura. The incident has triggered tension and anger among local residents.

The accused has been identified as Gautam Ghosh (44). The incident reportedly took place shortly after Wednesday evening, September 2, near the area adjacent to a Class XII school under Kathalia Gram Panchayat.

According to the complaint, Ghosh allegedly went to the residence of his younger brother’s wife, Mampi Ghosh, and attempted to physically assault her with the alleged intention of sexually assaulting her. At the time, a small child who was near Mampi reportedly raised an alarm, drawing the attention of family members and neighbours.

Hearing the child’s cries, local residents and family members rushed to the spot. The accused allegedly tried to leave the area after people arrived. Within a short time, a large crowd gathered, leading to tension at the scene. Some eyewitnesses alleged that the accused was assaulted by angry members of the public.

On receiving information, a police team led by Jatrapur Police Station Sub-Inspector Bijoy Chakraborty, along with police personnel and TSR jawans, reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Ghosh was taken to the police station that night and questioned.

Police said that during questioning, the accused allegedly admitted his involvement in the incident.On Thursday morning, Mampi Ghosh lodged a written complaint at Jatrapur Police Station. Based on her complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.

The incident sparked considerable tension in the school locality of Kathalia, with anger among residents continuing late into the night.

Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik said that the incident was genuine and that legal action was being taken based on the complaint. He also stated that the police station had previously received various allegations concerning the accused, including complaints from the Kathalia commercial area.

Following the completion of the police procedure, Ghosh was produced before the Sonamura court at around 11:30 am on Thursday.

The investigation into the incident is currently underway.
