Agartala, 23rd April 2026: In a major security operation, a joint team of multiple intelligence units of Tripura Police detained a man at the Agartala Railway Station after recovering nearly Rs 59.95 lakh in cash from his possession.
According to police sources, acting on specific intelligence inputs suggesting that a person might be traveling to Kolkata with suspected narcotics-related proceeds, the Special Branch, Narcotics Unit, and Government Railway Police (GRP) jointly set up surveillance at the station.
Around 7:10 AM, a black Scorpio SUV arrived at the station entrance. The vehicle reportedly bore a label indicating “District Forest Officer, South Tripura,” and a man dressed in forest department uniform was seen inside.
After alighting from the vehicle, the suspect was questioned by plainclothes officers. He initially allowed one bag to be checked but refused to open another, raising further suspicion. He was subsequently taken into custody and shifted to the GRP police station for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the Scorpio vehicle was instructed to be brought to the police station but managed to flee from the spot, deepening the mystery surrounding the incident.
A senior police team later reached the site and conducted a detailed search. Upon examination of the bags, a large amount of cash was recovered and counted in the presence of officials Rs 500 notes 11,899 pieces, Rs 200 notes: 200 pieces and Rs 100 notes: 100 pieces
The total amount was confirmed to be Rs 59,95,500. Authorities stated that preliminary verification suggests all the currency notes are genuine.
The detained individual has been identified as Rajendra Chintaman Kankachila, who claimed during preliminary questioning that he is a resident of Maharashtra.
Police officials are now investigating the source of the cash, its intended purpose in Kolkata, and whether the suspect has any links with the forest department or any illegal activities. Further inquiry is underway by senior officers of the Tripura Police.
