Man sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for ganja smuggling

Agartala, 28th July 2026 :   The Special Judge (NDPS Act), Agartala, West District, on Tuesday sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a ganja smuggling case.

The convict, identified as 55-year-old Mantu Yadav, a resident of Bihar, was also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 20(b)(ii)(c) of the NDPS Act. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

The case, registered as SPL (NDPS) 95/2025, originated from Agartala GRPS Case No. 03/2025 under Section 20(b)(ii)(c) of the NDPS Act.

According to police sources, on January 11, 2025, acting on a tip-off, personnel from the Government Railway Police Station (GRPS), Agartala, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, carried out a search operation at Agartala Railway Station. During the operation, a suspicious person was detained and later identified as Mantu Yadav. Police recovered 22.625 kg of dry ganja from his possession.

Following the completion of legal formalities, Yadav was arrested and a case was registered against him. After the investigation, Sub-Inspector Pankaj Kumar Das of Agartala GRPS submitted the chargesheet before the court on June 30, 2025.

After examining the evidence and hearing the proceedings, the court found Mantu Yadav guilty and awarded the punishment as per the provisions of the NDPS Act.
