Agartala, 8th August 2025: Former Tripura Chief Minister and CPIM Politburo member Manik Sarkar today accused the BJP-led central government of “conspiring to manipulate voter lists” to consolidate political power.
The allegation came during a mass procession and public meeting organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura State Committee in the state capital. The protest was aimed at opposing what the party described as an “undemocratic process” of deleting legitimate voters’ names under the special intensive revision of the electoral roll.
The rally started from the CPIM state office at Melarmath, weaving through the streets of Agartala before culminating at Shakuntala Road, where the public meeting was held. Alongside Sarkar, State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, former minister Manik Dey, and other senior leaders addressed the gathering.
“In states where BJP is not in power, they try to capture it by any means. In states where they are in power, they are using the guise of special intensive revision of the voter list to ensure they stay in power,” Sarkar alleged. He claimed the Election Commission’s decision to conduct similar revisions in all states going to polls after Bihar was intended to benefit the BJP.
Sarkar also accused the ruling party of altering the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner to suit its political interests and of using the Election Commission as a “political tool.” He said the CPIM, along with other INDIA Bloc members, had resolved to oppose the move and would stage a joint protest in front of the Election Commission office in New Delhi on August 11.
Addressing the gathering, Jitendra Chaudhury reiterated the call for a united opposition to safeguard democratic rights.
The rally drew significant participation from CPIM workers and supporters, who carried placards and chanted slogans demanding free and fair elections.
