Mass deputation by Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association

Date:

Agartala, 3rd August 2026:  The Dharmanagar Sub-divisional Committee of the Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association staged a protest march and mass deputation program on Monday, voicing strong opposition to recent electricity-related policies.

The demonstrators demanded immediate steps to address the abnormal hike in electricity tariffs, cancellation of the smart meter project, rejection of privatization moves in the electricity sector, and assurance of affordable power supply for the public.

The protest march began in front of the TGTA Dharmanagar Sub-divisional office on DNV Road, with participants carrying placards and banners highlighting their demands. The procession wound through several streets before reaching the office of the Assistant General Manager (AGM) of the Electricity Department. There, a delegation submitted a memorandum outlining their grievances.

Association leaders stressed that electricity is a public service and warned against imposing excessive financial burdens on consumers or privatizing essential services. They cautioned that, if necessary, a larger mass movement would be organized in the future.

Following the deputation, representatives expressed hope for swift and positive action from the authorities. However, they also signaled that any delay in addressing the demands could trigger more extensive agitation in the days ahead.
