The chilling incident took place on the evening of July 17, 2019, within the confines of Dulal Tanti’s residence, located in the vicinity of the East Sonatala Panchayat Office under the jurisdiction of Khowai police station.
This tragic episode was the grim outcome of an ongoing feud between uncle Rahul Tanti and his nephew Rahul Tanti, rooted in a protracted family dispute that had embroiled the two households.
On that fateful afternoon, tensions ignited in the neighborhood when Dulal Tanti, in a fit of rage, verbally abused his sister, Shankari Tanti, and her two sons, Rahul Tanti and Rajesh Tanti. Present at the time, Rajesh Tanti rushed home to relay the troubling account of his uncle’s abusive behaviour to his mother and grandfather. In response to this distressing report, Rahul Tanti, the grandfather, ventured to Dulal Tanti’s residence later that evening to seek an explanation for the abusive outburst.
However, the situation took a deadly turn when Dulal Tanti accused his nephew Rahul of engaging in an illicit relationship with his daughter. A heated altercation ensued, culminating in a physical brawl. It was during this confrontation that Dulal Tanti wielded a lethal ax, savagely striking his nephew Rahul Tanti in the neck. The vicious assault inflicted grave injuries on Rahul Tanti, and he was rushed to the district hospital, where medical professionals regrettably pronounced him dead on arrival.
Following the horrific incident, Shankari Tanti, the grieving mother of the deceased Rahul, filed a formal complaint with the police, accusing her brother Dulal Tanti of the murder. Subsequently, eleven individuals provided testimony on behalf of the prosecution in the court.
The verdict, delivered by Additional District Judge Rajib Bhattacharjee in Khowai, has found Uncle Dulal Tanti guilty of the heinous murder of his nephew. Pursuant to Section 302 IPC, the court has handed down a life sentence as the appropriate punishment for the convicted murderer. Additionally, Dulal Tanti has been fined Rs 5 thousand, and failure to remit this penalty will result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
This verdict marks a decisive step toward justice and accountability in a deeply distressing case that serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences that can result from family disputes turned violent.
