Agartala, October 16, 2023: A 15-year-old girl, who was admitted to a ‘purification’ centre in Tripura’s Sabrum, died on Saturday after allegedly attempting suicide by hanging. The girl’s parents had sent her to the centre, run by BJP leader Biplab Sen, to “show her the right direction” after she was involved in a relationship with a youth from West Bengal.

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has demanded a fair investigation into the death of the minor girl, who was a student of Shankaracharya Vidyaniketan in Jayanagar area. AIDWA leader Rama Das said in a press conference on Monday that the incident was “very sad” and that the girl had been subjected to physical and mental torture in the centre.

Das also criticised the role of the State Women’s Commission, saying that it had been inactive since 2018 and had failed to address the issues of women’s oppression and violence. She said that the recent incident was an attempt to destroy the unity of the state and the dignity of women.

Former MP Jharna Das Baidya and other leaders were also present at the press conference.
