Mayor calls sanitation workers ‘Cleanliness Warriors’, urges citizens to segregate waste

Date:

Agartala, 1st October 2026 :   Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder on Thursday called sanitation workers the “Cleanliness Warriors” of Agartala and stressed the need to ensure their health, safety, social security and dignity while urging citizens to cooperate with the Corporation in maintaining cleanliness.

He was speaking at a ‘Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir’ and the flagging-off ceremony of Task Force vehicles organised at the AMC premises. Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta, Additional Commissioner Mihir Kanti Gop, officials and other guests were present at the programme, which began with ceremonial lighting of the lamp.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Majumder said the Corporation was approaching civic management with a “new way and a fresh perspective”, keeping the needs of residents and local issues in mind and adopting modern technology and scientific methods for delivering civic services.

He said the Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir was aimed specifically at safeguarding the health and well-being of sanitation workers. “Just as we strive to keep our main city clean, we also look after the health, safety, social security and dignity of the people who work to keep the city clean,” he said.

According to the Mayor, AMC had previously conducted health check-ups, issued health certificates and brought sanitation workers under various insurance schemes. He said such initiatives were being continued to enable workers to perform their duties safely and effectively.

Highlighting the scale of the sanitation operation, Majumder said Agartala generates around 250 metric tonnes of solid waste every day from households, hotels, restaurants and other sources. The Corporation spends approximately ₹29 crore annually on keeping the city clean and beautiful.

He said around 1,455 sanitation workers are engaged across AMC’s four zones, while another 270 workers work at the Devendranagar and Rishinagar processing centres. “They are the ‘Cleanliness Warriors’ of our city. They work tirelessly from dawn throughout the day and into the night,” he said.

The Mayor said AMC’s objective was not merely to collect and transport garbage but to establish a scientific, sustainable and circular waste-management system. He noted that auto-tipper vehicles had recently been provided to every ward and that a 20-cubic-metre portable transfer station had been installed at Chanmari to improve waste transportation.

Referring to the ‘Amar Agartala’ app launched by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Majumder said technology was also being used to make civic services more accessible and efficient.

He urged citizens to cooperate with sanitation workers, particularly by handing over properly segregated household waste when Self-Help Group members visit their homes. He said such cooperation would help keep homes and neighbourhoods clean and contribute to the broader vision of making Agartala a clean and pollution-free city.

The Mayor also said that while efforts were being made to achieve 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection, only around 60 per cent of citizens had so far become involved in the initiative. He questioned the disposal practices of the remaining section and urged residents not to dump waste in drains or on roads.
