Agartala, 16th July 2025: Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and local MLA Dipak Majumdar on Wednesday conducted a surprise inspection of the Lake Chaumuhani Market and directed officials to immediately remove unauthorized temporary shops that have reappeared despite earlier eviction drives.
During the visit, the Mayor expressed concern over traders reoccupying government land by setting up makeshift stalls, even after their earlier structures were dismantled by the Corporation for violating civic norms.
“A section of traders continues to encroach on government land and run businesses without permission, leading to mounting public grievances,” said Mayor Majumdar while speaking to reporters. “These illegal setups are disrupting the flow of the market and causing inconvenience to both buyers and legitimate shopkeepers.”
He issued a stern warning that strict legal action would be taken against those who fail to vacate the encroached areas, reiterating that this is not the first instance of such defiance against municipal orders.
To address the issue in a more structured manner, the Mayor announced that the AMC will soon construct a temporary market shed at the site to accommodate around 125 to 130 vendors.
“This initiative is aimed at offering a systematic and equitable solution for those who have been conducting business here for many years. Until the permanent facility is built, the traders will be permitted to operate from the new temporary market shed,” he added.
Mayor Majumdar urged all traders to cooperate with the Corporation’s efforts to restore order, enhance market infrastructure, and ensure a cleaner and safer environment for all stakeholders.
