Agartala, 29th November 2024:   Melaghar police successfully conducted an ambush at 7 am on Friday recovering banned ‘Yaba’ tablets worth Rs 3 crore. The operation led to the arrest of the absconding driver and co-driver identified as Didar Hossain. However, the incident also resulted in injuries to several police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC).

According to District Additional Police Officer Rajiv Sutradhar, the ambush was based on a tip-off. “Acting on secret information, a large police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) force, led by Sonamura Police Station OC Debasish Saha, set up an ambush in the Indira Nagar area of Sonamura-Melaghar Road,” he said.

At approximately 6 am, the police attempted to intercept a Desire car with registration number TR07C-0207 coming from Kolubari towards Melaghar. The driver attempted to flee by ramming the police vehicle, causing the car to crash into a nearby house. “The impact of the crash injured several police personnel, including the OC of Melaghar Police Station, Constable Tapan De, Constable Liton Das, Driver, SPO Pappu Singh, ASI Kanu Lal Debnath, SI Subir Saha, and other officers,” Sutradhar detailed.

Despite the chaos, the police managed to seize two lakh sixty thousand Yaba tablets from the vehicle and apprehended the co-driver, Didar Hossain, a resident of Kulubari. “There were two individuals in the car. While one managed to flee, we successfully arrested Didar Hossain along with the contraband,” Sutradhar confirmed.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Additional District Police Officer Rajiv Sutradhar rushed to the scene to assess the situation. The seized car, along with the arrested co-driver and narcotics, was taken to Melaghar Police Station for further investigation.

The successful operation has been met with approval from the local community. “Such decisive actions by the Melaghar police are essential in combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of our region,” a resident remarked.

The police have launched an investigation to trace the escaped driver and uncover more details about the drug trafficking network. The community remains hopeful that continued efforts by law enforcement will help curb the menace of drug abuse in the region.
