Melaghar road blockade over BMS decisions ends after police intervention

Date:

Agartala, 25th April 2026 :   Traffic on the Melaghar–Urmoi road was paralyzed for nearly three hours on Saturday morning as hundreds of auto drivers staged a blockade in protest against what they described as “directionless” decisions by the local BMS unit.

The demonstration began around 8 a.m. at the Pachhar Marghat Samar Bridge area, where auto workers parked their vehicles across the road, effectively halting movement. The blockade caused severe disruption during peak hours, leaving office-goers, schoolchildren, and commuters stranded on both sides of the road.

Police from Melaghar station quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. After prolonged negotiations, the Officer-in-Charge assured the protesters that their demands would be reviewed and necessary steps taken. Following this assurance, the auto workers lifted the blockade around 11 a.m., restoring normal traffic flow.

The incident highlights growing unrest among transport workers in the region, with local authorities now under pressure to address their grievances to prevent further disruptions.
