Agartala, 26th October 2024:   In an unsettling incident in Agartala’s Ward No. 5, members of the Jyotirmoy Colony Memorial Club allegedly assaulted township workers engaged in cleaning activities, all in the presence of Ward Councillor Lata Nath. This incident took place on Saturday at 79 Tilla area here, has raised serious concerns about worker safety and accountability among local leaders.

Eyewitnesses reported that the conflict began when workers were cleaning around a local temple as part of their assigned duties. According to the complaint, club members Asish Acharya, Mihir Das and Babul Sarkar approached the workers and began issuing threats, demanding to know why the club premises had not been cleaned first. When workers explained that the temple cleaning was prioritized, the club members reportedly became aggressive.

“While we were simply performing our duties, they accused us unfairly and threatened us,” shared Samir Debnath, a township worker who was reportedly shoved by the club members. His colleague Naru Deb attempted to intervene but was also met with hostility. Female workers were allegedly pushed to the ground, with Samir receiving explicit threats to his life, intensifying the group’s fear of retaliation.

Amid the rising tension, the workers turned to the NCC police station, filing a formal complaint to ensure their safety. “We are committed to looking into this matter thoroughly,” a police spokesperson said, adding that an investigation has been initiated to address the allegations. The workers are urging for a direct intervention by the Mayor, calling for legal action to deter such confrontations in the future.

Councillor Lata Nath, who witnessed the entire incident, has come under public scrutiny as the incident took place under her watch. Questions are being raised about the influence the club holds within the community. “It’s shocking that such brazen behavior was displayed in front of an elected representative. It begs the question of how far these powers extend and who else might be supporting them,” commented a local resident.

This incident has cast a shadow over Agartala Municipal Corporation’s reputation for good governance, with community members condemning the alleged attack. Many are now demanding an official inquiry and an assurance of safety for those simply carrying out their civic duties.
