Agartala, 23rd December 2025:   A memorial honoring the bravery and sacrifice of BSF Constable Ghanakanta Nath was unveiled at Srimantapur Border Outpost (BOP). The bust of the fallen soldier was formally inaugurated by DIG V.K. Kasana of the BSF Gokulnagar Sector Headquarters.

The ceremony was attended by Commandant Rakesh Sinha of the 81st Battalion, Company Commander Sumil Vora of Srimantapur BOP, along with officials from Customs and the Srimantapur Integrated Check Post. BSF officers paid floral tributes and offered a ceremonial salute at the newly built memorial.

Constable Nath’s story of valor dates back to July 1989. On the night of July 9, Nath was on naka duty with his team. The following morning, while returning to the BOP near the Gomati River, he spotted four smugglers carrying contraband nearly 200 yards inside Indian territory and alerted his team. Acting on orders, Nath and another constable pursued the smugglers through sugarcane fields along the riverbank.

As the smugglers attempted to flee by jumping into the Gomati River, which was flowing with a strong current, Nath, unarmed and undeterred dived into the river to intercept them between border pillars 2083/8-S and 2083/9-S. Displaying exceptional courage and professionalism, he continued the chase despite grave danger. Tragically, while nearing the opposite bank, just 20 yards away, Nath disappeared beneath the waters and drowned.

His body was later recovered with the assistance of Bangladesh Rifles and handed over to the BSF. Though his service spanned only two years, Constable Nath’s supreme sacrifice remains etched in the nation’s memory. The bust at Srimantapur BOP now stands as a lasting tribute to his heroism.
