Minor girl threat case at Sekerkot takes new turn; Police identify key instigator

Date:

Agartala, 3rd June 2026:   The case involving alleged threats made to a minor girl at gunpoint in the Sekerkot area has taken a significant turn, with police uncovering new details during the course of their investigation.

Addressing the media on Tuesday afternoon, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Amtali Police Station, Inspector Paritosh Das, revealed that preliminary findings point to the involvement of the minor girl’s sister’s cousin-in-law as the primary orchestrator behind the incident.

According to police sources, the family of the minor girl had lodged a written complaint at Amtali Police Station a few days ago, accusing one Jayadev Debnath of threatening and intimidating the girl by displaying a pistol. Acting on the complaint, police initiated a detailed investigation and seized multiple mobile phones, including those belonging to the minor girl, Jayadev Debnath, the girl’s brother-in-law, and his cousin.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the images of the pistol allegedly used to threaten the girl were not sent by Jayadev Debnath. Instead, the accused cousin-in-law had reportedly downloaded these images from the internet and forwarded them to the minor girl, thereby fabricating and orchestrating the entire episode.

Following widespread media coverage of the developments, both Amtali Police and district authorities intensified their probe. In a related development, the minor girl’s father reportedly attempted to reach a settlement with Jayadev Debnath after realizing that his own relatives, including his son-in-law and the latter’s cousin, could face legal consequences. However, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of West District, Namit Pathak, firmly rejected any possibility of compromise.

The SP has issued strict instructions to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, directing police to register a formal case against those found guilty. Acting on these orders, the seized mobile devices have been sent to a forensic laboratory for detailed analysis.

Police officials confirmed that legal action will be initiated under appropriate sections once the forensic report is received, and arrests will follow accordingly.

Meanwhile, certain close relatives of the minor girl, including her brother-in-law, have allegedly been making inconsistent statements in an attempt to shield the accused. There are also allegations that efforts are being made to obstruct the investigation by leveraging political influence.

Inspector Paritosh Das reiterated that strict action will be taken against the prime accused identified in the preliminary investigation and assured that no one involved in the incident will be spared once the forensic evidence is confirmed.
