Tight security in Agartala ahead of Amit Shah’s Tripura visit

Date:

Agartala, 3rd June 2026:   Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened across Agartala ahead of the upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Tripura.

Important locations in the state capital have been placed under heightened surveillance, with authorities putting in place multi-layered security measures since Wednesday.

Officials said the Home Minister is scheduled to arrive in Agartala on Thursday evening after attending the North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session in Shillong. He will reach the city via a special Indian Air Force aircraft.

As part of the preparation, police carried out a security rehearsal along VIP Road on Wednesday. The drill covered the route from the State Guest House to the old Raj Bhavan (Pushpabanta Palace) to test convoy movement and coordination.

The temporary suspension of traffic during the exercise led to congestion across parts of the city, causing inconvenience to commuters, including office workers and students. Normal traffic flow was later restored.

Authorities stated that the exercise was conducted to ensure smooth movement during the VVIP visit. Around 15 key checkpoints have been set up along the route, along with additional deployment of security personnel at sensitive locations.

During his visit, Shah is expected to attend several official engagements. On Friday, he will take part in the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the proposed hotel project at Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala.

Security around the venue has been tightened further in view of the high-profile event, with officials stressing the importance of maintaining strict vigilance.

The Home Minister is also scheduled to visit the Lankamura border area along the India–Bangladesh frontier, where he will inspect fencing and the Border Outpost (BOP). The visit will focus on reviewing border security arrangements and infrastructure readiness.

Later, he will hold a high-level meeting at the BSF headquarters in Shalbagan to discuss issues such as infiltration control, anti-smuggling operations, and overall border management.

tate authorities have ramped up preparations, coordinating between police and security agencies to ensure smooth conduct of the visit. The trip is also expected to include discussions on development initiatives and security-related matters in the region.
