MLA Birajit threatens PIL over demolition of market shed

Date:

Agartala, 6th April 2026:   MLA Birajit Sinha has threatened to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Kailashahar Municipal Council after a nearly completed market shed at Hawkers’ Corner in Kailashahar was allegedly dismantled by a group of youths.

The incident reportedly took place recently when the structure, built for local vegetable vendors with funds from the Border Area Development Programme, was about 95 percent complete and awaiting inauguration.

It is reported that the project was planned during the 2020–21 financial year after discussions with vegetable vendors to improve their working conditions in the market area. The construction, estimated to cost around Rs. 50 lakh, was meant to provide a proper shelter for vendors selling vegetables at the Kailashahar market.

However, locals claimed that a group of youths arrived at the site in several vehicles and started dismantling the structure in broad daylight. Local businessman Gopesh Pal alleged that the group removed tin sheets, iron rods, and other materials from the shed. When questioned by locals, the men reportedly did not give any explanation and continued the demolition.

Speaking at a press conference, Sinha called the incident a serious waste of public funds and demanded that the municipal council file an FIR against those responsible. He warned that if no action is taken within a few days, he will approach the court by filing a PIL to ensure accountability.
