Agartala, 13th November 2024: Setting an inspiring example, BJP MLA Sushanta Deb from Tripura celebrated his birthday on Wednesday by adopting a Royal Bengal Tiger at the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary & Zoo.
Deb took responsibility for Shera, a tiger brought to the sanctuary from North Bengal seven months ago, for the next three months.
As part of the zoo’s animal adoption policy, MLA Deb will cover Shera’s expenses for food, medication, and other essentials during this period. Sharing his motivation, Sushanta remarked, “Since my childhood, I’ve had a deep interest in social work. This is my second birthday as an MLA, and while many contribute to society, animals are also deserving of our compassion. Protecting them is essential for environmental balance, which led me to adopt Shera at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary & Zoo.”
Deb explained that he initially reached out to the department regarding adoption, and after completing the required process, he received a three-month permit.
Zoo Director Biswajit Das noted that caring for Shera costs the zoo around Rs 7.7 lakh annually in food and medicine. He thanked the MLA for his contribution and urged others to consider adopting animals as well, as this support would directly benefit the zoo’s care initiatives.
