Agartala, 5th June 2025 :  The NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of Sabroom Michael Madhusudan Dutta College, MMD College Alumni Association and Sabroom Forest Department  jointly celebrates “World Environment Day” today.

World Environment Day was first initiated on June 5, 1972, in Stockholm, Sweden and has been observed worldwide since then. The day raises awareness, promotes action, and encourages environmental sustainability. This year’s main theme for World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution.” To address the escalating environmental crises around the globe, Goutam Tripura, President, Sajal Nath, joint-secretary of the college’s Alumni Association and Sambhu Charan Debbarma, Forest Beat Officer, Sabroom were present and delivered short speech emphasizing the importance of awareness and action against plastic pollution.

Among other speakers Dr Dipankar Deb, Secretary, Teachers’ Council, highlighted the close relationship between humans and the environment since ancient times. They explained that humans create and modify the environment and from the environment, they derive the resources necessary for physical, moral, social, and economic development. However, due to evolutionary progress and technological advancements, humans have gained unprecedented control over the environment, which has both benefits and drawbacks.

Today, environmental problems are among the most serious issues facing the Earth, threatening human existence itself. In this context, they emphasized the importance of conscious and responsible environmental conservation rather than indiscriminate exploitation.

During the program, NSS volunteers, forest officials, teachers, and staff members collectively organized a joint cleanliness drive within the college premises. All students pledged to keep the college plastic-free. Subsequently, more than 150 trees were planted across various parts of the college, and everyone was urged to take responsibility for the sustainable development and preservation of these trees.

The participation of college students in celebrating World Environment Day was remarkable, reflecting their awareness and commitment towards environmental protection.
