Agartala: October 19. In a dramatic turn of events, MNREGA workers from various villages including Mainama, Jamirchhara, North Dhumachara rallied together and held protest after locking Manu RD Block office. The protest was sparked by the delay in settling their pending wages, despite promises made by local authorities.

The block officer, along with other employees, found themselves locked out, struggling to address the agitated workers’ demands. Despite the festive season, the workers expressed their frustration that their rightful dues had not been paid.

Upon inquiry, the workers revealed that previous attempts to obtain their wages from the panchayat office were met with evasion tactics, as the secretary referred them to BDO. Feeling deceived, the workers decided to take a stand.

“We repeatedly inquired about our wages, only to be told that the money hadn’t been transferred. Yet, when we checked with the bank, it was clear that many days of wages were still pending,” the MNREGA workers said. The situation escalated when the workers, united in their cause, locked the main gate of the block, vowing not to unlock it until their pending wages were settled.

Manu police station was swiftly informed of the situation and dispatched officers to mediate. Through dialogue, the police managed to bring the protesters under control, preventing any further escalation.
