Agartala, 10th January 2026:    The vulnerability of Kalamchoura police station without an OC was exposed when armed miscreants attacked the North Boxnagar Jame Mosque on December 22. The assailants, wielding sticks and sharp weapons, smashed glass windows and damaged the steel gate, allegedly attempting to kill Maulana Nur Hossain Kasemi, principal of Boxnagar Madrasa. Several locals sustained injuries while trying to resist the attackers, three of whom stormed inside the mosque. The madrasa principal was eventually rescued by police and taken to his residence in Putia.

The incident is linked to tensions with local MLA Tafajjal Hossain, who was denied invitation to the madrasa’s annual religious gathering. Organizers accused him of delivering misleading speeches in previous years. Angered, his followers allegedly pressured Kasemi to secretly invite him, which he refused. Retaliation began with the eviction of 47 madrasa students from a government school hostel, forcing the madrasa to seek temporary shelter for them in the mosque.

During a committee meeting to approve this arrangement, the MLA’s supporters, led by Ashabari Panchayat Upa-Pradhan Alamin, launched the attack. Despite CCTV footage and medical records submitted, police delayed action. Finally, after 17 days, a case (No. 6/26) was filed against 12 accused. A forensic team from Agartala has since visited the site, while questions remain over whether arrests will follow or political influence will dilute the case.
