Agartala, 1st September 2026 : BJP former state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya on Tuesday backed the Tripura Assembly Speaker’s decision to expel Opposition MLA Sudip Roy Barman from the House, saying that parliamentary rules and discipline must be maintained for the smooth functioning of the Assembly.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Agartala, Bhattacharya said all members should respect the decisions of the Speaker as well as the established rules and conventions of the legislature.
His remarks came a day after an uproar in the Assembly during which Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled from the House following a heated situation. Defending the Speaker’s action, Bhattacharya stressed that political differences are natural in a democracy, but legislators must adhere to parliamentary norms.
The BJP leader also criticised statements made by CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at various public meetings. He described some of their remarks as “distasteful” and contrary to political decorum.
“Political differences are a natural part of democracy, but they should not turn into personal attacks or contribute to the deterioration of the political environment,” Bhattacharya said.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya categorically dismissed speculation over a possible political understanding between the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party. He said no discussions had taken place between the two parties regarding any such arrangement.
“There has been no discussion with Tipra Motha on this issue so far,” he said, adding that reports and speculation about a possible meeting or political understanding between the two parties currently have no basis.
Bhattacharya maintained that the BJP would continue its political activities within the democratic framework while ensuring discipline inside the Assembly.
His comments came amid heightened political tensions in Tripura following the recent Assembly proceedings, with the Speaker’s action against the Opposition MLA, criticism between BJP and CPI(M) leaders, and speculation over a possible BJP-Tipra Motha understanding dominating the state’s political discourse.
