Agartala, 27th January 2026: The nationwide strike by bank employees has had a visible impact in Dharmanagar, North Tripura. On Tuesday, staff at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch joined the protest called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).
Employees stated that although the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has already recommended the introduction of a five-day banking week, the central government has yet to give final approval. As a result, workers said they were compelled to participate in the strike.
Outside the SBI branch in Dharmanagar, employees staged demonstrations carrying banners highlighting their demands. The strike led to a complete suspension of services for nearly 24 hours, including cheque clearance, cash transactions, and other essential banking operations.
Customers bore the brunt of the disruption. Many pensioners, who typically receive their pensions at this time of the month, were left stranded. The situation was worsened by the fact that the strike followed four consecutive holidays, leaving people unable to access funds for urgent needs. Not only pensioners but also salaried individuals and those requiring emergency transactions faced severe inconvenience.
Union members warned that if their demands are not addressed seriously, the agitation could intensify further. Meanwhile, local customers have appealed to the government and bank authorities to take swift action to prevent the public from facing financial distress.
