Agartala, 30th April 2026 : National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Thursday called for effective implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, stronger gender sensitisation, and intensified efforts to curb child marriage and human trafficking during a state-level workshop on sexual harassment of women at the workplace held at the State Guest House in Agartala.
Addressing officials and stakeholders, Rahatkar said the Commission was working closely with state governments to ensure safer workplaces for women. She expressed optimism that Internal Committees (ICs) and Local Committees (LCs) under the POSH Act would become fully functional across Tripura within the next few months following discussions with the Chief Secretary and senior officials.
She emphasised the importance of gender-sensitive policing, stating that the NCW regularly engages with senior police officers and encourages periodic training programmes to improve the way women are treated while seeking assistance. She also urged women facing domestic violence or other forms of abuse to approach the police without fear, noting that institutional mechanisms are available to support them.
Highlighting Tripura’s vulnerability as a border state, Rahatkar stressed the need for constant vigilance against human trafficking. She said specialised awareness programmes had been organised for BSF personnel to strengthen prevention and prosecution efforts.
The NCW Chairperson also described child marriage as a major social challenge that disrupts girls’ education, affects their health, and limits future opportunities. Expressing confidence in the state government’s commitment, she said Tripura could contribute significantly to achieving the national goal of eliminating child marriage before 2030.
Rahatkar praised the growing leadership of Tripura’s women, particularly members of Self-Help Groups, saying economic empowerment has enhanced their confidence, social standing, and role in family and community development.
