Agartala, 28th August 2024: A man’s house in the Subhash Park area of Khowai district sank into the pond owned by the Ever Green Club due to alleged negligence by club officials. Samranjan Shil, the house owner recounted the harrowing experience. The house located in the Subhash Park Kalibari Evergreen Club area of Ward No. 2, Khoai Char Ganki Gram Panchayat, collapsed into the pond late last night. Despite several occupants being inside the house at the time, they managed to escape safely. Samranjan Shil and his family squarely blame the Ever Green Club authorities for their predicament.
According to Rajat Shil, Samranjan Shil’s son, the tragedy resulted from the club’s failure to address repeated requests for a proper boundary wall behind their house. Instead, the club had encroached on their property with bamboo fencing. A year ago, the Panchayat attempted to stabilize the house using bamboo sticks, but the recent heavy floods caused the bamboo structure to collapse, pulling the adjacent house into the pond. The family spent a sleepless night witnessing their home’s gradual descent into the water.
Acting on behalf of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) the Tehsildar investigated the incident and submitted a report. The situation highlights the discrepancy between the Ever Green Club’s permanent paved boundary around its own pond and the lack of action regarding the Shil family’s concerns. In 2021, Samranjan Shil had detailed the incident in a letter to the district president, but the issue persisted. Now, the community awaits the administration and club authorities’ response to prevent further tragedies like this one.
