Agartala, 12th July 2026: Residents and vehicle drivers have once again expressed strong concern and resentment over the deplorable condition of the National Highway (NH-8) stretch from Chamtilla to Agnipasha. The road, which was repaired only a few months ago, has deteriorated again, with several large and deep potholes making daily travel extremely risky for commuters.
According to local residents, some potholes on the road are nearly one to one-and-a-half feet deep, posing a serious threat, especially to small vehicles such as auto-rickshaws, tuk-tuks, motorcycles, and other two-wheelers.
Local sources said that around seven to eight months ago, traders, auto drivers, and tuk-tuk drivers of the Panisagar subdivision had launched a protest against the poor condition of the road. They had jointly staged a road blockade demanding immediate repairs. Following the agitation, the concerned authorities took steps to repair the road.
However, residents allege that the repair work was only temporary and lacked proper quality, as the road has once again developed major potholes within a short period. They claim that the present condition clearly reflects the negligence and lack of a permanent solution by the authorities.
The damaged portions of the highway have made daily commuting dangerous. Residents said that several minor and major accidents have already occurred on this route, while drivers fear that a major tragedy could happen at any time if immediate action is not taken.
Local people have also expressed frustration over what they describe as administrative indifference. They pointed out that the same road is frequently used by elected representatives and senior government officials of the Panisagar subdivision. Despite witnessing the difficulties faced by hundreds of commuters every day, no effective and long-term measures have reportedly been taken to ensure public safety.
The growing neglect has led to increasing disappointment and anger among residents and commuters. The people of the area have urged the concerned department to take immediate and permanent steps to repair the NH-8 stretch before any major accident occurs. They have demanded a safe and smooth road system to ensure hassle-free travel for the general public.
