NIT MBA student dies by suicide after court marriage; Family alleges husband’s harassment

Date:

Agartala, 13th June 2026:   A 22-year-old MBA student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) allegedly ended her life after facing humiliation and mental harassment in her marital relationship, according to allegations made by her family. The deceased, identified as Priya Deb, daughter of Suman Deb of Sripalli area under Badharghat, had entered into a court marriage with Parob De of Ranirbazar on November 21 last year.

According to Priya’s family, the couple had been in a relationship for nearly three years before deciding to marry. Discussions between both families had reportedly progressed smoothly, and the court marriage was conducted with mutual consent. Parob, who works at a company in Siliguri, West Bengal, later began facing differences with Priya, leading to frequent disputes between the couple, the family alleged.

Priya’s relatives claimed that after the marriage, Parob allegedly refused to give her the respect and status of a wife and often threatened her with legal action and financial consequences. They alleged that these issues caused Priya severe mental distress.

The family suspects that another argument took place between the couple on Friday. Their concern grew when Priya did not respond despite repeated calls and failed to wake up until around 11 am on Saturday. Family members eventually broke open the window of her room and found her hanging.

Hearing the cries of the family members, neighbours rushed to the spot and informed the Arundhatinagar Police Station. Police personnel arrived and recovered the body, sending it to the morgue for post-mortem examination.

Priya’s sudden death left her family devastated. Her father stated that he would lodge a formal complaint with the police regarding the incident. Speaking to the media, Priya’s mother demanded justice for her daughter and alleged that Parob was responsible for the tragedy.

Police have initiated the necessary procedures, and further investigation is expected after receiving the post-mortem report and the family’s complaint.
