Agartala, 16th April 2025: In a remark that blends humour with a deeper political undertone, Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma floated an idea that’s likely to stir conversation across the Northeast — the region needs its own beach, and it might be time to look beyond borders.
“Why should people from the Northeast have to travel all the way to Goa for a beach vacation when places like Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar are so close by?” Pradyot wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday. The casual tone belies the larger message: a nod to his long-standing vision of a “Greater Tipraland” that transcends international boundaries.
While the statement might read like a travel suggestion, it subtly points toward his broader political philosophy — one that seeks to culturally and historically reconnect the indigenous Tripuri people spread across both India and Bangladesh.
Cox’s Bazar, home to the world’s longest natural sea beach, and the port city of Chittagong are just a few hours’ drive from parts of the Northeast, making them more geographically accessible than India’s western coastal hotspots like Goa or Kerala.
Pradyot has previously argued that the idea of Greater Tipraland should not be confined by today’s political maps. Instead, he envisions a cultural and ethnic unification of Tripuris, irrespective of which side of the border they belong to. He has consistently urged the Indian government to acknowledge and support these communities with shared ancestry and history.
