Agartala, 11th June 2025 : Hundreds of NREGA workers from various blocks in North Tripura gathered today to submit a memorandum to the district administration demanding immediate payment of their pending salaries. The workers, who have not received their wages for the past two months, expressed their distress over the financial hardship they are facing.
The deputation initially meant for North Tripura’s District Magistrate was received by Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das in his absence. Secretary of the North District NREGA Workers’ organization Prantosh Bhowmik handed over the written petition, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
“NREGA workers in Tripura have been contributing to rural employment programs since 2007. However, despite our dedication, the government has withheld our salaries for the last two months,” Bhowmik said while addressing the gathering.
He further added, “Most of us work on a contractual basis and have been waiting for regularization, but the delay in salaries has pushed us into extreme financial distress. Families are struggling—our children’s education, medical expenses, and even daily necessities are at stake.”
Workers from different blocks echoed similar concerns, asserting that non-payment of salaries has left them with no choice but to take their grievances directly to the administration. “We have conveyed our demands to the District Magistrate through this deputation, hoping that the government will take immediate action and provide a resolution,” said a representative from the delegation.
Acknowledging their concerns, Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das assured the workers that their demands would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities. “We will escalate this matter to the higher officials and urge the government to provide a solution at the earliest,” he stated.
Amid growing frustration, the workers warned that if their salaries remained unpaid, they would be compelled to launch a statewide movement. “We are appealing to district officials right now, but if necessary, Rega workers from across the state will take to the streets in protest,” Bhowmik declared.
