Illegal logging sparks probe at Harish Nagar Tea Garden

By TC News Desk

Agartala, 11th June 2025 :  A widespread tree-selling racket has been unearthed in Harish Nagar Tea Garden, where it is alleged that shade trees have been illegally sold for profit, leaving the lush estate vulnerable to environmental degradation. The illicit activity, reportedly ongoing for a considerable period has sent shockwaves among garden workers and prompted an investigation by the Forest department.

The issue came to light when concerned workers alleged that a fellow employee was responsible for the unlawful sale of shade trees. “All the shade trees near the central jail have been sold,” remarked one worker, expressing frustration over the unchecked deforestation. Additionally, reports indicate that the garden’s water bodies have been affected, with fish mysteriously disappearing, further intensifying concerns.

Upon receiving complaints, the forest department officials launched an immediate probe, combing through various sections of the tea garden. During their search, they reportedly recovered illegal wood from multiple locations, including the residence of a worker identified as Rajesh Tanti. However, sources reveal that Tanti absconded following the discovery, raising suspicions about his involvement in the illicit trade.

Garden officials appear to be in disarray over the incident. The manager, who has been on leave for two months and is currently out of state, was unavailable for comment. In his absence, acting manager Ramesh Sharma assured that the matter was being thoroughly investigated. “We are looking into the allegations, and the culprits will be identified soon. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” Sharma stated.

Authorities have vowed to track down those responsible for the illegal sale of trees, and further searches within the garden are expected in the coming days. Meanwhile, workers remain on edge as they await decisive action against the perpetrators.

As investigations continue, environmentalists stress the importance of preserving shade trees in tea gardens, as they play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting tea cultivation. The forest department has urged residents to come forward with any information that may aid in their inquiry.
