Agartala, 21st August 2025: A shocking incident at Gomati District Hospital has raised serious concerns about the state of public healthcare services, as two government nurses engaged in a heated physical altercation in full view of patients and their families.
According to eyewitnesses, the nurses Lipika Das of Chataria and Meera Sarkar of Maharani, both long-serving staff members were seen pulling each other’s hair and hurling personal insults during a dispute that reportedly stemmed from allegations of infidelity and character defamation. The situation escalated to such a degree that relatives of patients had to intervene to restore order.
Video clips circulating on social media show the nurses exchanging slaps and shouting obscenities with one accusing the other of having an affair with her husband, while the other retaliated by questioning her colleague’s moral integrity. The disturbing footage has left patients and their families visibly distressed, with many expressing disbelief over the lack of professionalism in a government-run medical facility.
“This is not what we expect from healthcare workers. Every few days, there’s shouting, sometimes even physical fights. We come here for treatment, not trauma,” said a relative of a patient, who claimed such incidents are not isolated.
Sources within the hospital allege that both nurses have been stationed at the facility for over a decade and have developed strong local ties that allow them to remain in their posts despite repeated complaints. Instead of administering saline drips and injections, they are accused of spending time in personal disputes and power struggles, sidelining patient care.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for intervention from the state Health department. Critics argue that the hospital has become a battleground for personal feuds rather than a center for healing. Patients reportedly endure verbal abuse and neglect on a regular basis, with little to no oversight from hospital authorities.
“Is this what nursing has come to? Where is the administration? How long will patients suffer while public servants engage in theatrics?” asked a local activist.
