Agartala, 21st October 2026 : A tragic accident at Chakmaghat under the Krishnapur Assembly constituency on Maha Navami night claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy, while another teenager of the same age sustained critical injuries. The incident occurred amid the festive celebrations, casting a pall of gloom over the entire Chakmaghat area.
The deceased has been identified as Jit Sarkar, aged 17. The injured teenager, Dip Choudhury, also aged 17, is currently battling for his life at GBP Hospital in Agartala.
According to reports, the two minors were travelling on a red-coloured scooter from Teliamura towards Chakmaghat on Tuesday night at a reportedly high speed. Eyewitnesses said that near the Loknath Ashram area, the scooter went out of control and crashed violently into either a vehicle parked along the roadside or a large banyan tree.
The impact was so severe that the scooter was badly mangled, and both riders were thrown onto the national highway, sustaining serious injuries. Hearing the loud crash, local residents rushed to the spot and found the road covered in blood.
Personnel from the Teliamura Fire and Emergency Services Department soon arrived at the scene and rescued the two injured teenagers. They were taken to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where the attending doctors declared Jit Sarkar dead. As Dip Choudhury’s condition was critical, he was referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
The tragic incident has raised serious questions about how two 17-year-old minors came to possess and ride a high-speed scooter. Questions have also been raised about parental supervision during the festive night and the role of traffic police in ensuring road safety.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over underage driving, with questions being asked about how minors allegedly riding without valid driving licences and helmets can move freely along national highways.
Police have launched an investigation into the accident, and the damaged scooter has been seized.
The fatal crash on Maha Navami night has plunged Chakmaghat into mourning, turning what was supposed to be a night of festive joy into one of grief and sorrow.
