Agartala, May 21: In a concerted effort to curb sudden spikes in sugar hoarding, administrative officials initiated a operation at approximately 10 am on Tuesday. The operation was led by a coalition of administrative bodies including the Home Administration, Food Department, Fire Department, Taxation Department, Legal Metrology Department, Food and Civil Supplies Department, GST Department, Transport Department, BSF, CRPF, and personnel from the Belonia Municipal Council targeted suspicious stockpiling activities.
During the operation, officials sealed the godown located at Milon Pal’s residence adjacent to the Belonia police station. Inside, authorities found open sugar containers alongside sacks of salt. The closure was attributed to both impurities found within the godown and inadequate infrastructure.
Speaking to the media personnel post-operation, Additional Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Belonia sub-division emphasized the magnitude of sugar trading under scrutiny hinting at potential links to smuggling networks operating across state borders, particularly towards Bengal. Pal, the owner of the sealed godown, failed to produce requisite documentation beyond GST records, and was found conducting business in violation of legal statutes by housing a sugar godown within his residence.
Sources suggest that the administration launched the operation in response to multiple complaints regarding illicit trading activities in the area, underscoring Belonia’s growing reputation as a hub for sugar smuggling.
