Agartala, 2nd February 2024 : The opposition leader Animesh Debbarma on Friday fired salvos to the President of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education, Dr Dhananjay Gon Chowdhury for issuing an order to lodge an FIR against the supervisors of the examination centers if the students write their answers in Roman script.
Debbarma, who is an elected people’s representative of TIPRA Motha, held a press conference on Friday and accused Dr Chowdhury of violating the guidelines of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which recognizes Kokborok as the second official language of Tripura and allows it to be studied in the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE).
He said that the order was an attempt to suppress the linguistic rights of the indigenous people of Tripura, who have been using Roman script to write Kokborok for decades. He claimed that 137 languages in the world, including English, French and German, are written using Roman script and there is no legal basis to file an FIR against the supervisors for allowing it.
He demanded that the order be withdrawn immediately and the president of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education be removed from his post. He also warned of launching a mass movement if the government does not heed to his demands.
The Tripura Board of Secondary Education is the body that conducts the higher secondary and secondary examinations in the state. The examinations are scheduled to start from March 15 and March 16 respectively. An official notification regarding the order was issued on Monday.
The Tripura Board of Secondary Education was established in 1976 by the Tripura Legislative Assembly under the Tripura Board of Secondary Education Act, 1973. It is responsible for providing higher education and granting affiliation to its schools. It also regulates the syllabus, curriculum and textbooks for the students.
